What Is VoIP? A Plain-English Guide for Irish Businesses

“VoIP” gets thrown around a lot, usually wrapped in jargon. Here’s the plain-English version for business owners.

VoIP in one sentence

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) simply means your phone calls travel over your internet connection instead of a traditional phone line. That’s it.

Why businesses use it

Because carrying calls over the internet is cheaper and far more flexible than old copper lines. In practice, VoIP gives you:

  • Lower, more predictable bills — no line rental for legacy lines, cheaper calls
  • The same numbers — your existing business numbers move across
  • Answer calls anywhere — desk phone, laptop or a mobile app
  • Modern features as standard — voicemail-to-email, call menus, forwarding, reporting
  • Easy growth — add a line for a new starter in minutes

Do you need special equipment?

Not much. You need a decent broadband connection and either VoIP handsets or an app on your computers/phones. There’s no big box to buy and maintain — with a Cloud PBX, the “brains” of the system live securely in the cloud.

Is it reliable?

On a stable business broadband connection, call quality is excellent. The honest caveat: if your internet is poor, that needs sorting first. A good installer will check your connection before recommending anything — we always do.

Is VoIP right for us?

For most Irish businesses, yes — especially now the old phone network is being retired (see the PSTN/ISDN switch-off guide). If you want to compare it directly with what you have, read VoIP vs landline.
